Petrovich & Walsh in the news

Representing Lee Boyd Malvo
Both Mark Petrovich and Thomas Walsh were vital parts of the legal defense team that represented Lee Boyd Malvo, the disadvantaged juvenile who was charged in the series of crimes which the media referred to as the “Beltway Sniper” cases. Both Mr. Petrovich and Mr. Walsh were named as attorneys for Mr. Malvo shortly after his arrest, and were counsel for Mr. Malvo from November, 2002 through the final sentencing in April, 2004.
The two partners defended Mr. Malvo and actively litigated in the courtroom on his behalf through all stages of the case. These included when the case originated in the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, when Mr. Malvo was certified to be tried as an adult and during pre-trial motions and hearings in the Fairfax County Circuit Court, and finally, when the case was tried to a jury in the Chesapeake Circuit Court over a two-month time period. The Lee Boyd Malvo case was one of the most high profile cases in recent Virginia history. Both Mr. Petrovich and Mr. Walsh (along with prominent other members of his defense team, including lead counsel Craig Cooley and Michael Arif), dealt with the extreme pressures of a high profile capital murder case involving a juvenile in a jurisdiction away from their home office.
Despite the extraordinary difficulties, the defense team rose to the occasion and were able to obtain a verdict which spared Mr. Malvo his life. The experience has helped the partners obtain the skills to handle virtually any criminal case.
